Syllabus for IELTS

To achieve high scores in the IELTS exam, you need to know the syllabus that contains a total of four sections: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. Here we get to know the detailed insights of the IELTS exam structure.

Now let’s know about the types of IELTS exam:

  1. IELTS Academic: This test is basically for individuals who are planning to study. Basically, this test contains four modules that are Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking; it includes academic language and tasks.  
  2. IELTS General Training: This test is basically for individuals who are planning to work abroad or for immigration purposes. This test also contains four modules that are Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. 
  3. IELTS for UKVI: This test is specifically designed for those who are planning for a UK visa. This language requirement for visa applications is accepted by the UK and proof of having the English language proficiency.
  4. IELTS Life Skills: In this test, the individuals who need to prove their English language ability for UK visa purposes. In this test there are two levels: A1 (for family route) and B1 (for the settlement route).

IELTS Syllabus sections-wise

Here’s an overview of the IELTS syllabus section-wise, whether you are aiming for IELTS Academic or IELTS General Training in 2024.

  1. IELTS Listening Syllabus: In the IELTS listening part, there are 40 questions, and the time duration is 30 minutes to solve this part. In this, you have to listen to four recorded texts—two monologues and two conversations—once only, and then you have to give the answers to the questions in the test while listening to the audio. After giving the answer, you have time to check your answer and move on to the next part.

Part 1 is the conversation between two people on the basis of everyday social context. Eg., discussion of an accommodation.

Part 2 is the monologue on the basis of social context, e.g., an explanation regarding buses of the company for tourism.

Part 3 is the conversation between four people discussing about any subject-related topic, e.g. discussing an assignment

Part 4 is the monologue on an university subject, e.g., a university lecture.

 

 

2.  IELTS Reading Syllabus: In the IELTS reading part, there are 40 questions, and the time duration is 60 minutes to solve this part. In this, you need to understand the writer’s perspective and understanding.

There are two types of Reading

  1. Reading-Academic: In this there are long reading passages with questions given in the test, and the topics are of general interest for students. Also, the text of the reading part contains different styles, diagrams, and graphs.
  2. Reading-General Training: In this, there are five or six text paragraphs present with questions. Section 1 contains some shorter paragraphs on general topics; Section 2 contains two short paragraphs that contain work-related topics; and Section 3 contains one longer paragraph on general interest topics.

 

3. IELTS Writing Syllabus: In this there are two tasks given to you in writing part You only have 40 minutes of duration in this task to write at least 250 words. Let’s know about the both tasks.

  1. IELTS Academic Task 1: In this task, any visual representation is given, and you need to describe the representation in your own words. You have to write at least 150 words in 20 minutes.
  2. IELTS Academics Task 2: In this task you are having one problem and you need to understand the situation and write the solution in your own words. 
  3. IELTS General Training Task 1: In this task, you need to write a letter explaining the situation and asking about the information. You have to write at least 150 words in 20 minutes.
  4. IELTS General Training Task 2: In this task you have to discuss an argument and the point of view; sharing our own opinion for the valuable feedback enhances the higher scores in writing.

 

4. IELTS Speaking Syllabus: In this there is a communication process taking place, and on the basis of your speaking skills, your scores will be evaluated. This round is taking place to check your proficiency in spoken English on an interview basis. The duration of this test takes about 11 to 14 minutes to complete. This test is similar to both academic and general training. Let’s understand the parts of speaking:

  1. Part 1: This part takes 4 to 5 minutes in which the examiner asks you the general questions like introduction, family, work, interest, or study-related topics.
  2. Part 2: This part takes 3 to 4 minutes in which the examiner gives you a card that asks you to prepare for 1 minute and start speaking for 2 minutes, and after speaking, the examiner asks one or two questions related to that topic.
  3. Part 3: This part takes 4 to 5 minutes in which the examiner asks more questions related to that topic of Part 2. To discuss more on that topic with the examiner, these questions help you to achieve high scores in the speaking test.
